Dr Peter J. Lewis

After graduating with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery from the University of Sydney, Peter practiced as a general dentist in Broken Hill, London and then for over a decade in Albury.  During this time Peter gained invaluable experience of the full range of dental conditions and feels that he can better treat his patients through this understanding of comprehensive dental care.

Peter developed a keen interest in orthodontics which led him to return to Sydney University to study for a further three years full time to achieve his specialist qualifications. This decision was not undertaken lightly as he was by then married with three children.

He joined North Shore Orthodontics as a partner immediately after becoming a specialist and the following year established Hornsby Orthodontics. In 2001 he took over in Armidale from Dr Jim Mackie, who had serviced the area for over 35 years.

Peter is committed to orthodontic excellence not only in his practices but within the profession. He taught in the specialist orthodontic program at the University of Sydney for over a decade before becoming an external examiner of specialists and accreditor of specialist training programs. He has held many professional positions including the Federal President of the Australian Society of Orthodontics, President of the Australian Society of Orthodontics (NSW Branch), President of the University of Sydney Orthodontic Alumni, Chairman of the Visiting Orthodontic Professorial Program at the University of Sydney, the orthodontic representative on the Australian Dental Board’s Expert Reference Group for Specialists and a member of the Australian Dental Council's site evaluation team.

Peter holds memberships of the Australian Society of Orthodontists, World Federation of Orthodontists, American Association of Orthodontists, the European Orthodontic Society, the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons, the Australian Dental Association and Fellowships of the International College of Dentistry and the Pierre Frauchard Academy.  Peter is a Give a Smile™ Orthodontist supporting pro bono treatment of the disadvantaged and also aids the Yalari Aboriginal Foundation with the care of rural children.

He is highly motivated and attends conferences regularly to keep his clinical skills at the cutting edge. Peter’s expertise lies in the treatment of difficult and complicated interdisciplinary cases, including surgical care, where he acts as a tertiary referral orthodontist for a number of other specialists.  He brings considerable enthusiasm, knowledge and experience to New England Orthodontics.

Peter loves being an orthodontist as every day gives him an opportunity to improve someone's smile and self esteem.
